Bonnie Prince Charlie, the ’45, and the end of old Scotland

The 1700s were a critical time for Scotland: unwelcome union with England, the final showdown between the Stuart dynasty and the ruling House of Hanover. War and Rebellion, a Romantic myth and the end of old Scotland. By the time of the wars with Napoleon, the Highlands had changed forever, new economic forces were transforming the Lowlands, and the trickle of Emigrants which would become a flood in the 1800s had begun. For the Scots, it was either time for transformation, or time to be leaving…
