About This Program

Join local historian Duff Crerar for this talk on The Road to Bannockburn.

“After the rise of Kenneth Mac Alpin, the Dalriadic Scots and Picts eventually fused into one kingdom known as Alba. By the time the Normans invaded the Lowlands, Alba was known as the Kingdom of the Scots. By then, the Lion of the North, as the King of Scots proclaimed himself, was perceived (and sometimes experienced) as a threat by the English. After years of war and chaos, the King of England, Edward Plantagenet, becoming both kingmaker and overlord of the Scots, a situation which has resulted in some of the most lucrative and inaccurate films and novels in Scottish history! We will trace the evolution of Alba to Scotland and the famous Wars of Independence, and find out not only who the real Braveheart was, but also who were the real William Wallace, and the real Robert Bruce.”
